A Fine Recommendation
So Park Associates and Entertainment Technology Center At USC have recommended that “Hollywood” cut Apple out of the loop in movie-and-tv-show distribution? That sounds like a winning idea.
Hollywood shouldn’t let Apple make all the money, especially since they [Hollywood] are the ones making the movies. — John Barrett of Park
Good idea! And while you’re at it, be sure to cut out TiVo, Netflicks, Vudu, Blockbuster, Wal-Mart, and all those other interlopers. They don’t make the movies either. Come to think of it, do the movie theaters make movies? No? Cut them out too! Who needs a physical distribution system — all we need to do is make movies, not show them to anybody for crying out loud.
Judicious use of free mobile content can help drive ticket and DVD sales.
Oh, so we can’t cut out the theaters and DVD resellers after all. Even though they don’t make the movies. Darn. But at least now we have a realistic strategy — nobody minds having to buy every movie they want to watch at home, do they? Hmmm... maybe they do. So we can’t cut out Blockbuster. That’s good enough; nobody minds forcing their DVD player through all those scratched spots on rented DVDs. I myself consider it a kind of fun challenge: Can I figure out what’s going on after all those funky squares filled the screen? Adds a zesty element of mystery to otherwise dull films.
Keep up the good work, Park and USC! You’ll save us from Apple’s cool products yet.
